PERSONALITY:
Much of Saturn's personality is influenced by Iapetus, the division leader of Celestial Mechanics – though, more specifically, how he treats her in the past. As her superior, they share a romantic relationship before the game's narrative begins, and he grooms her to become much like an extension of himself: a type of person that sees all the angles, is supremely confident, and never suffers any major defeats. While younger and more impressionable, Saturn obediently buys into all of it, and to an extent that it ties directly into her self-worth. Based on the way he treats her, and the acknowledgement of her abilities, she starts to feel special and important, even among her similarly-talented peers. Her ambition is to eventually pilot the String of Pearls, which will be integral to Celestial Mechanic's end goals. Based on all of the above, she incorrectly assumes that she's a shoe-in.
She doesn't get the job, though, and this causes a major shift in how Saturn views herself. She comes to loathe Iapetus, and harshly resists his influence, along with anything she associates with him. It sparks a rebellious and defiant nature in her. She enjoys defying orders. Unlike her old mentor, who is described as "always smiling," Saturn embraces her spite and the elation it brings her when she tears down the people and things that she doesn't like. Additionally, rather than finding fulfillment in practical plans, well thought out solutions, and having set approaches to rely on, she admits that she much prefers stirring up fun and excitement any way she can. If there is potential for dire consequences? All the better, so long as anyone she loves doesn't get too damaged by it.
"Anyone she loves" doesn't always include herself, which is why she's willing to risk her life and her future when she commandeers the String of Pearls. The majority of her self-loathing comes from how she used to act while under Iapetus's thumb. Defying authority is empowering to her, and so is piloting her Ship-Self, which she ends up using however she likes, with the potential to betray Celestial Mechanics and assist with the plans of anyone she can truly believe in. Even though it throws everything into chaos, Saturn doesn't take the String of Pearls with any single, clear intention. The fact that there are so many unknown variables excites her.
This relates to another trait that can make her difficult to deal with, which is her lack of attention span. It ties in with her hedonistic tendencies, since her priorities tend to fluctuate based on what interests or excites her the most at any given time. She willing admits this and doesn't particularly see it as a flaw, largely because she doesn't see much value in rigid structure and predictability. Much like her love interest Luna-Terra, if someone or something is boring, then she's going to have a low opinion of them/it. She gives off the impression that she doesn't spare much thought for the bigger picture, but it's more that she prefers to bounce between tasks and problems that hold her attention. The larger game is to make all the threads connect, and if that becomes super tricky, then she'll have fun dealing with the improbability of success.
Saturn's loved ones play a huge role in her life; there are very few things she approaches with full sincerity, but looking out for them is one that she definitely does. She expresses this clearly to her closest friend and confidant, Mercury, before her final mission. She loves searching for new relationships to form, and she does so aggressively, with a tendency to grow close to certain types of people over a short period of time. This happens with her other main love interest, Pluto, and with Luna-Terra as well throughout the course of the game. They both have attributes that she's very attracted to, and can be viewed as an inverse to the ego-driven ex that she hates: Pluto displays unconditional affection, but she's grounded by the understanding of her own limitations; Luna-Terra is incredibly critical of herself, and thus her own desires, which means Saturn treats the prospect of earning her trust and affection like an extremely difficult (and thus rewarding) challenge.
In her pursuit of love and companionship, Saturn is pointedly shameless. She enjoys teasing and provocation almost as much as she enjoys flirting, and typically there is strong overlap and ambiguity between them. Her style of romance is abstract – the game even refers to it as "button mashing" – but her ultimate intention in the moment is rarely unclear. If said pursuits lead to kissing and sex, then she will partake and thoroughly enjoy it, but she gets a lot more out of a relationship that goes far beyond physical attraction, and that's something she's well aware of. In essence, she loves the physical stuff, but doesn't require it. A stimulating conversation or debate can be almost as good. There's a sense of greed to it, because the most desirable outcome for her is to get as much of all of the above as she can. The game ending with her in a polyamorous relationship reflects this.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Saturn is extensively trained as a pilot, but the type of machine (mech) she uses in the game, her Ship-Self, is a powerful, "existentially horrifying" prototype that is controlled uniquely. How this will translate to the game: she will have the skills and savvy to learn fast when it comes to technology and ship operation that she's not completely familiar with; this will also apply to her talent as a hacker, which is exceptional. Physically, nothing stands out about her.
